Guidelines for developing inclusive water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructure
This publication builds on the experience of five organizations working towards inclusive WASH infrastructure development around the world: the United Nations Office for Project Services, the United Nations Children's Fund, the International Labour Organization, WaterAid and Arup.
This publication is a collaborative effort with UNOPS, UNICEF, WaterAid, and ARUP that aims to promote inclusive infrastructure in water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector. The technical guide provides practical resources to governments and infrastructure practitioners in the Global South in how to mainstream inclusion in infrastructure development.
The guidebook was launched during World Water Day on 22 March 2024.
On that occasion, Mito Tsukamoto, Chief of the ILO Employment in Investments (EMPINVEST) Branch, stated that:
"The International Labour Organization (ILO) recognizes that access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) is key to meeting basic human needs. It directly impacts on health and well-being, and affects people’s ability to engage in meaningful and productive activities. The ILO has supported and implemented WASH projects in several countries through employment-intensive investment approaches in infrastructure development that ensure that investments create decent and inclusive jobs."
