Jamaica became a member of the International Labour Organization (ILO) on 26 December 1962, just four months after gaining independence. Since then, the country has continuously demonstrated a commitment to the promotion of decent work and social justice.

Through its membership, the Jamaican Government, employers, and workers have engaged in tripartite social dialogue and collaboration to find solutions to labour market challenges. Over the years, the country has benefited from ILO technical assistance and capacity building aimed at establishing policies and programmes to address job creation, fair wages, gender equality, child labour, formalization, social protection and a just transition to an environmentally sustainable economy and society.
