The STRENGTHEN2 team talks about Employment Impact Assessments at ILC 2024
6 June 2024
The 112th International Labour Conference started on 3rd June 2024 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, gathering representatives of governments, workers’ and employers’ of ILO’s 187 Member States to discuss about the World of Work.
On Tuesday 4th, the STRENGTHEN2 team was present at the ILC Engagement Zone to meet with the delegates and present the project and its achievements. Many delegates from francophone African countries were interested in the project’s activities in Senegal, Cameroon and Côte d’Ivoire, and the team spent some time explaining how Employment Impact Assessments help to achieve the creation of more and better jobs.
The project indeed conducted in-depth studies of road and electricity projects of multiple investment projects in sub-Saharan Africa, and assessed the creation of direct, indirect and induced jobs, of temporary and long-term natures (see our publications). Other aspects of decent work have also been covered by the studies, such as social protection with health insurance and paid leave, and access to social infrastructure such as health facilities and schools.
All these studies are shared with relevant national stakeholders, and they can be used to inform current or future investment projects and policies, to place the creation of jobs as a main element in the decision-making process.
